Signal Radio started out as the ILR station for Stoke-on-Trent on the 5th September 1983
John Evington was the launcher of signal radio and the first song he played was Neil Diamond’s Beautiful Noise
On the 14th September 1992 Signal split its AM and FM frequencies with the AM service renamed Signal Gold and the FM service renamed Signal 1
Signal started another service on the 15th October 1990 called Echo 96 covering Macclesfield on 96.4 and Stafford on 96.9
By 1992 the Stafford 96.9 frequency returned to Signal 1 while the Macclesfield 96.4 was joined with the 104.9 frequency in Stockport (formerly KFM) to create Signal Cheshire.
This was later renamed Signal FM before being rebranded as Imagine FM.
The 96.4 frequency for Macclesfield has now returned to Signal 1 while Imagine FM continues on 104.9 only.
